openSUSE Tumbleweed – Review of the Week 2016/40

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,

This week had more action behind the scenes than snapshots released. In fact only one made it out to the mirrors so far this week (1003).

3 Snapshots have been produced, tested and discarded. The main reasons were:

  • 0930: lightdm crashed, affecting all users of this display manager
  • 1002: Various update issues identified, xorriso existed twice in the repo
  • 1004: Plasma 5.8 regressions spotted, e.g. clock not shown on panel

So you see, when we say Tumbleweed is tested when we release the snapshot, we actually mean that.

And in that one snapshot that has been delivered, you could enjoy these updates:

  • Digikam 5.2.0
  • Qt 5.7.0 (still introduced some issues which were fixed with the Update repo)
  • Lightdm 1.19.5 (after the crashes had been fixed)
  • Libreoffice 5.2.2.2
  • Mono 4.6

The things upcoming are:

  • Plasma 5.8 (snapshot 1006+)
  • Kernel 4.7.6 (also 1006+)
  • LXQt 0.11.0 (also 1006+)
  • Kernel 4.8 (currently being staged)
  • Freetype 2.7 – all known issues resolved
  • Postgresql 9.5 as a new addition
  • LLVM is being prepared to allow multiple versions to co-exist
  • bash 4.4 (dracut still needs to be fixed)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 45.4.0

As you can see, the next snapshots will be loaded with many good things.

Enjoy the updates, and have a lot of fun
