openSUSE Tumbleweed – Review of the Weeks 2016/14 & 15

β€’

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,

It seems to be difficult in the last weeks to find really interesting new features to write about. The fact that Plasma 5.6 and GNOME 3.20 are already available takes a lot of wind out of the sails. So a request to all of you: keep the things coming πŸ™‚

This review spans again two weeks and touches the snapshots 0401, 0404, 0405, 0406, 0407, 0408, 0411 & 0412.

Noteworthy updates:

  • Plasma 5.6.2
  • XChat has been replaced by hexchat
  • KDE Framework 5.21.0
  • Mesa 11.2.0

And of course, as always, many more version updates and bigger and smaller bug fixes.

The next snapshot to be released, 0414 will contain the security fixes for SAMBA, which might be awaited by many of you. You can expect the snapshot ‘shortly’: the build process is almost completed and the snapshot will be handed over to openQA.

Things currently being prepared in the Staging areas:

  • GLibC 2.23. NOTE: once this hits Tumbleweed you have to cope with a larger update as we will do a full build cycle including all dependencies
  • GNOME 3.20.1 – mostly minor fixes and updated translations
  • Qt 5.6.0: The YaST issue is still pending. The installer does not have the keyboard focus on startup
  • Linux Kernel 4.5.1
