GNOME 3.8.0 for openSUSE 12.3

Hi all!

First the good news: GNOME 3.8 for openSUSE 12.3 is shaping up rather well, despite the heavily overloaded OBS, we have a first ‘draft’ repository working.

The bad news: no, it is not just ready yet for ‘prime’ use. There are a few ‘easy upgrade’ issues to be sorted out… currently, zypper/YaST ask some ugly questions about no outdated packages to be removed.

Are you brave and curios? Feel free to add the home:dimstar:broken repository to your system (mind it: it DOES say broken in the name!). Ok, our tests showed it’s not completely broken if one answers all the yast questions smartly and ‘truthful’.

We believe though, having checked in fixes for all of the issues encountered and OBS is busy building again… about 30% already done. Once the builds are published in my ‘test project’ again, we will do some more checkups and if everything goes well, will release it into the wild.

ETA: approx end of this week.

Happy hacking all!

Update 2013-4-09: The now released ‘home:dimstar:broken’ repository seems to be much smoother than a few days ago… no more errors in my tests from zypper. Can anybody confirm this?

    Hi Mr. DIM*,

I am using the OBS GNOME:Factory repository since the official release of the new version and I still have no dependancy issues. Only the today’s build required libpng >= 1.16. YaST did not complain and my system is working fine. It is time to publish a openSUSE 12.3 repository.

Best regards to the whole GNOME team for the job being done.

openSUSE is unbreakable. Have a lot of fun…

Fantastic news! I’m anxious to give a Gnome 3.8 + 12.3 environment a real test drive. Thanks for all of your hard work and contributions!

    Hi!

    Thanks for the work.

I’m updating openSUSE 12.3 in a VBox using your repo home:dimstar:broken. The only problem regarding the installation using zypper was with the package gnome-control-center-branding-openSUSE-12.2-4.7.1.noarch that depends on gnome-control-center-3.6.3-3.3.1.x86_64. I chose to remove this package and now the packages from your repository are being downloaded. As soon as the installation is finished, I will post the details about it.

    Thanks,
    Ronan

Thanks for your braveness in testing and your feedback.
    That specific one is ‘known’ now already and about 15 minutes ago I checked in a fix for that.. OBS is building a new package;

Gnome 3.8.0 was installed without problems.
It works, but there are some problems like:

    1) There are many untranslated text (I’m using pt_BR)
    2) Gnome-Classic does not start correctly if I choose gnome-classic at GDM. I just can start it with the command:

    gnome-shell –replace –mode=classic

However, I don’t have the list of windows at the bottom panel, it is empty.

    Thanks,
    Ronan

for 1) there are likely some -lang packages not installed on your system. The ‘dependencies’ are likely satisfied by a bundle-lang-xx package…
for 2) nice catch… I’ll remember this, but will not hold back the entire repo for the classic mode (but rest assured that I will look into it)

The issue with gnome-control-center-branding has been resolved…
More issues to be aware of before we move it to the right namespace ?

Well, besides this issue with gnome-control-center-branding, I haven’t had any problem in upgrade. By the way, will these packages work in Tumbleweed?

Thanks for making Gnome 3.8 available. I just installed from the new GNOME:STABLE repo. No errors during installation, but I have severe issues with GDM. The system freezes completely before the login screen is shown. It works only in openSUSE Fallback mode. I tried KDM and XDM, both work fine.
    Best regards,
    Torsten

    Torsten,

Just a few minutes I added a section at the end regarding INTEL Graphic chips issues; can you please verify if you are hit by this?

Thanks for your quick answer. Indeed I have a INTEL HD 3000 graphics chip, so it seems the issue affects me… what can I do to solve the problem?
    Best regards,
    Torsten

Sorry for asking silly questions in my previous post; I just found your comment on INTEL chips and tried modifying grub2.cfg accordingly. Now the GDM login screen pops up perfectly, everythying seems to work.
    Thanks again,
    Torsten

Glad that this is also your issue in this case (Well, not glad that you gave an issue.. but that there is a solution to it)
